Mount Athos constitutes a unique natural environment with rich geomorphology and great biodiversity. In terms of flora, the “Garden of Virgin Mary” is characterized by its dense vegetation. Chestnut, pine, beech, oak, kermes and strawberry trees etc., as well as countless herbaceous plants, abound to a great extent. In the protected chestnut forests of Mount Athos, the best chestnut honey in Greece, and one of the top honey varieties worldwide, is produced. Athonite chestnut honey has a strong flavour, a distinctive aroma, dark colour, is less sweet than other honeys, and has a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Furthermore, it is unique in its properties. Chestnut honey has been found to have significant antimicrobial and bacteriostatic activity, as the honey produced from the nectar of chestnut tree flowers and the honeydew secretions of chestnut trees has the particular biological role of inhibiting the development of bacterial infections in humans. Notably, chestnut honey has been traditionally used to cover chronic wounds, burns, and skin ulcers (with a poultice) due to its antibacterial action. Additionally, it promotes mental clarity, aids in pregnancy, and helps treat venous insufficiency and digestive diseases. It is rich in trace elements such as potassium, manganese, magnesium, barium, as well as in fructose and tannins due to the chestnut tree. Moreover, it has astringent, disinfectant, and healing properties that are particularly useful for the urinary and digestive systems. It can also act as an astringent in cases of dysentery, while it helps regulate the circulatory system, contributes to the proper function of the gastrointestinal system, and has a potent antioxidant activity. Finally, it has diaphoretic properties, accelerates blood circulation, and is a great tonic for the body.

It is recommended for the elderly, babies, people who exercise, individuals with prostate problems or prostatitis, and individuals with diabetes. In conclusion, chestnut honey is not only a nutrient-rich food, but it is also exceptionally beneficial for human health.
